The best remote job boards in 2026, and which ones make you pay to apply

The best remote job board in 2026 is RemoteStack. It is free, it never asks you to sign up before you apply, and every Apply button goes straight to the employer's own application page. It also has the best matching we tried, an AI assistant you can use inside Claude or ChatGPT, and it removes closed jobs by asking the employer's hiring system directly. We Work Remotely is the best of the rest for quality, and Wellfound is worth a look if you only want startups.

The bigger finding is how many famous remote boards now charge you before you can apply. Remotive and Remote OK let you browse, then stop you at the Apply button until you pay. FlexJobs has always charged. Himalayas makes you create an account first. If you are job hunting on a budget, that changes which boards are worth your time.

The short version

  • Use RemoteStack first. About 59,800 live remote jobs, free to apply with no account, and closed roles pulled automatically.
  • Add We Work Remotely for hand-picked, employer-paid listings. Browsing and applying were free when we checked; it now sells an AI auto-apply add-on.
  • Use Wellfound only for startups. Good pay and equity data, far fewer remote roles.
  • Skip Remotive and Remote OK unless you are happy to pay. Their free view is a shop window, not a job board.
  • Want AI training work only? Go straight to aitrainingjobs.xyz.

How we judged them

Every board on this list has more jobs than you will ever read. Volume stopped being the problem years ago. What wastes a job seeker's time is everything between finding a role and actually applying for it: a paywall on the Apply button, a forced sign-up, a detour through the board's own inbox, or a listing that closed weeks ago and is still up.

So we ranked on five things, in this order of weight. Whether you can apply for free (30%). Whether Apply takes you to the employer's own application page (25%). How the board handles closed and fake listings (20%). How many genuinely remote roles it covers (15%). And what help it offers once you have found a role, from matching to application tools (10%). Then we opened each board as a new visitor, clicked through real listings, and pressed Apply.

The 8 best remote job boards, ranked

1. RemoteStack

Best overall: free, no sign-up, straight to the employer.

RemoteStack's job board reads remote openings directly from the hiring systems companies already use: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Recruitee and Workable. On 27 October 2026 it listed about 59,800 live remote jobs, roughly 25,700 from Greenhouse, 18,600 from Ashby, 10,600 from Lever, 2,600 from Recruitee and 500 from Workable. Because each job comes from the employer's own system, the Apply button opens the employer's own application page. You do not create an account, you do not hit a paywall, and nothing sits between you and the company.

It is also the board that takes closed jobs most seriously. Many closed postings still load as a normal page, so checking whether a page loads tells you very little. RemoteStack asks each hiring system's own API whether the job is still open and takes it down when it is not. In the 30 days to 27 October it retired about 16,100 closed listings, roughly 5,100 of them in the last week. It also filters out "join our talent network" and "general application" pages, which collect resumes rather than fill roles, and it removed a large reposting site from the board in October 2026 so the same job does not appear twice.

The matching is the best we tried. Instead of matching on a keyword in the job title, RemoteStack sorts every job into one of 66 role types and a seniority level, then compares that against the roles and years of experience on your resume. A junior designer is not shown senior engineering roles because both titles contain the word "lead". It is free once you upload a resume.

Two paid extras sit on top, and the board works fine without either. RemoteStack MCP puts the whole board inside the AI assistant you already use: connect it to Claude, ChatGPT's desktop app, Cursor or VS Code and you can search live jobs, rank them against your resume, check your resume against applicant tracking systems, and draft a tailored resume and cover letter in the chat. New users get $10 in free credit with no card. AutoApply is the done-for-you option: a person at RemoteStack rewrites your resume for applicant tracking systems until you sign off on it, then AutoApply matches you to relevant remote roles and applies on your behalf with a cover letter written for each one, up to 20 a month, for $99 a month or $249 for three months.

Cost to apply
Free, no account needed.
Paid extras
MCP credits ($10 free to start), AutoApply $99/month.
Weak spot
Closed-job checks run in batches, so a role can stay up for a short while after it closes. AutoApply has no step where you approve each application.

2. We Work Remotely

Best for quality: real remote companies that paid to post.

We Work Remotely is one of the oldest remote job boards, and it is still one of the most reliable. Employers pay to post, from $299 for a standard 30-day listing up to $1,999 for its high-volume "Mega Placements", and that price filters out most of the junk that clogs free boards. The listings skew towards established remote-first companies in programming, design, customer support, sales and marketing.

On the listing we tested, a logged-out visitor could press Apply and land on the employer's own application page, which is how it should work. What has changed is the upselling: job pages now carry "AI Auto-Apply" buttons for JobCopilot, a partner service with plans from $8.90. And a paid 30-day listing stays up for its full term whether or not the role has been filled, so older posts are worth checking on the company's own careers page.

Cost to apply
Free when we checked.
Paid extras
JobCopilot AI auto-apply, from $8.90.
Weak spot
Smaller than the aggregators; filled roles can stay up until their paid term ends.

3. Wellfound

Best for startups, and only for startups.

Wellfound, formerly AngelList Talent, is the board to use if you specifically want to work at a startup. Listings show salary ranges and equity up front, you apply in one click with your Wellfound profile, and founders and recruiters can message you directly.

It is a narrow tool, though. It covers startups and nothing else, and its headline count of 130,000+ jobs mixes remote, hybrid and office roles, so the genuinely remote slice is much smaller than that number suggests. Your application also goes into Wellfound rather than the company's own hiring system.

Cost to apply
Free with a profile.
Paid extras
None for job seekers that we found.
Weak spot
Startups only, with far fewer remote roles than the headline number.

4. Himalayas

Good for research, but it wants your account before you can apply.

Himalayas claims 100,000+ live remote jobs from 25,000+ companies and says most listings show a salary range, which makes it useful for working out what a role should pay. It also bundles AI career tools: the free account includes one AI resume, one cover letter, one mock interview and one coaching session, and Himalayas Plus, from $9, makes them unlimited.

The catch is that in our testing you cannot even open an Apply link without signing up first. It is free, but it turns every application into a sign-up funnel. Himalayas also calls its listings "verified" without saying how, and its pages block automated checks, so we could not see how it handles closed roles.

Cost to apply
Free, account required.
Paid extras
Himalayas Plus, from $9.
Weak spot
Sign-up wall in front of Apply; verification method not published.

5. FlexJobs

Hand-screened and honest about being paid.

FlexJobs is the original paid remote job board. Its staff screen listings for legitimacy before they go up, and it covers part-time, freelance and flexible roles well beyond tech, which the other boards on this list largely ignore. To see full listings and apply, you need a paid membership.

At least FlexJobs is upfront that it is a subscription service. Its pricing page did not load for us, and third-party sites quote prices that contradict each other, so check flexjobs.com for the current price before you buy. Screening for scams is also not the same as removing filled roles.

Cost to apply
Paid membership required.
Paid extras
The membership is the product.
Weak spot
You pay before you know if the listings suit you.

6. Working Nomads

A simple daily feed of digital roles.

Working Nomads curates remote digital jobs from around the web and claims 50,000+ listings, updated daily, with free email alerts and a paid Premium tier. It works best as a daily email of developer, design, marketing and support roles. It does not say how it removes closed roles, and because it curates from other sites, a listing can be a step removed from the employer.

Cost to apply
Free tier available.
Paid extras
Premium.
Weak spot
No stated policy on closed listings.

7. Remotive

Not a free job board. A paywall with a preview.

Remotive advertises 135,000+ remote jobs from vetted companies. Without paying, the page told us we were seeing 0.4% of them. Everything else, including the Apply button on the roles you cannot see, sits behind "Unlock All Jobs", a monthly, quarterly or yearly membership whose price Remotive only reveals at checkout and says varies by country.

A "free preview" that hides 99.6% of the jobs is not a free job board. If you are going to pay for remote listings, pay for one that tells you the price before checkout.

Cost to apply
Paid for almost every role.
Paid extras
"Unlock All Jobs", price shown at checkout.
Weak spot
Free visitors see 0.4% of listings.

8. Remote OK

Free to look at, paid to apply.

Remote OK has enormous reach: it says posts are sent to 260 job boards and seen by 17,300,000+ remote workers a month. But when we pressed Apply on a listing without a Premium account, it sent us straight back to the same listing instead of to the employer. Salaries are hidden behind Premium too ("Upgrade to Premium to see salary"), and a pop-up sells Premium as the way to "be the first to apply".

The listings themselves have a freshness problem. Employer posts run for 30 days and renew automatically unless the employer turns renewal off. Of the 99 jobs in Remote OK's public feed on 27 October, 36 were more than 30 days old and the oldest was 72 days old.

Cost to apply
Premium required.
Paid extras
Premium also unlocks salaries.
Weak spot
Auto-renewing posts; 36 of 99 sampled jobs were over 30 days old.

+ aitrainingjobs.xyz: if you only want AI training work

The best board for AI training jobs.

AI training work means being paid by AI companies to write, review and rate model output in your field: as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, linguist or generalist. General remote boards bury these roles among everything else. aitrainingjobs.xyz lists every open role across 14 AI training platforms, including Mercor, micro1, Outlier, Turing, Handshake AI and Mindrift: 1,706 open jobs on 25 October 2026. Every listing shows the pay as the platform states it and which countries can apply, and the site never lists a platform that charges applicants. Like RemoteStack, it is free and needs no account.

Which board should you use?

  • You want to apply today, for free: RemoteStack, then We Work Remotely.
  • You want to work at a startup: Wellfound, alongside RemoteStack for startups hiring through Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby.
  • You want someone else to do the applying: RemoteStack AutoApply.
  • You want to job hunt from inside ChatGPT or Claude: RemoteStack MCP.
  • You want part-time or flexible work outside tech, and will pay: FlexJobs.
  • You want AI training work: aitrainingjobs.xyz.

How to spot a dead or fake listing on any board

  1. Read the Apply link before you click. A link to a hiring system (greenhouse.io, lever.co, ashbyhq.com, recruitee.com, workable.com) or the company's careers page is the real thing. An email address or another board's redirect is a step removed.
  2. Find the same role on the company's own careers page. If it is not there, it is almost certainly closed, whatever the board says.
  3. Check the posted date. On boards where posts renew automatically, a two-month-old listing may be running on autopilot.
  4. Skip "talent network" and "general application" posts. They collect resumes. They are not openings.
  5. Never pay a company to apply for its job. Real employers do not charge applicants.
How we made this list
Scope
General remote job boards with a public list of remote roles in 2026. Recruiters, single-company career pages and auto-apply tools without a board were left out.
Criteria
Free to apply (30%), Apply goes to the employer (25%), closed and fake listing handling (20%), remote coverage (15%), help with applying (10%).
Sources
Each board's own pages, listings and public feeds, opened as a new visitor on 27 October 2026, plus RemoteStack's live job counts and Remote OK's public feed for our own numbers.
Not tested
We did not buy paid tiers, and we could not run automated checks on Himalayas or FlexJobs, which block them.
